Moving: we’ve all done it, piling Sharpie-labeled cardboard box on top of Sharpie-labeled cardboard box, going through roll after roll of packaging tape. We get to our new place only to see that half of our “nice” dinner dishes are smashed to bits, along with that glass figurine thingy Grandma gave us years ago.
Thing is, we paid for those boxes that did nothing to protect our stuff. And (let’s be real) most of them ended up in the trash.
Tom Cannon, co-founder and CEO of BungoBox (and this week’s live chat host) is on a mission to make moving suck less by replacing the most annoying piece of the moving puzzle: those collapsible, environmentally unfriendly boxes. (Half end up in the trash, not the recycling bin.)
He came across this genius idea during his tenure in the Navy, when he noticed that large distribution centers almost never used cardboard, but industrial strength, uncrushable plastic. At the same time, he was helping a friend move — and realized cardboard was the only option out there.
BungoBox, a moving box rental company with a sense of humor, was founded as a cost-effective alternative to the cardboard conundrum. Their industrial strength boxes get dropped off and picked up for a tiny rental fee (cheaper than buying those brown boxes) and reused up to 400 times before being recycled. They also come with custom fitted dollies for easy moving (bye, strained back!).
To boot, they’ll protect your stuff a lot better, have removable labels AND help the environment (one BungoBox alone, says Tom, saves 1,575 gallons of water, four large trees, 923 KW hours of energy and 40 gallons of gas).
Today BungoBox has 20 locations in the U.S. and Canada, and as a result of Tom and his team’s incredible work, the company has received multiple accolades — Oustanding Small Business 2012 (Orlando Business Journal), the 2010 “B.I.G.” Award for innovation and growth (Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce) and many more.
This Thursday, February 14th at 3 PM EST, join Tom for an hour-long #StartupLab live chat, presented by Citi. As the founder of three successful companies with years of experience in executive positions, Tom is a great mentor to quiz on everything from small biz branding to staying cash-flow positive to franchising your small business.
